Representatives from the Iranian opposition and civil society outside Iran will meet at a conference in Stockholm on 4-5 February. The conference brings together senior representatives from different parts of the opposition outside the country as well as writers, activists and university teachers outside Iran. About 50 persons are expected to participate.
The conference is called Unity for Democracy in Iran. The conference takes place in order for the opposition to be able to meet and discuss how they can unite their efforts for democracy in Iran, not the least due to the March elections.
- Members of the opposition approached us for help to set up a meeting with representatives from different fractions of the opposition. They were also looking for methods on how to coordinate their work, says Jens Orback, the Secretary General of the Olof Palme International Center.
The conference is part of the Olof Palme International Center’s work to support opposition movements in authoritarian states. The conference is closed to the media and for others than specially invited guests.
