Strong, democratic unions are a prerequisite if workers are to gain influence, fair wages and good working conditions. Increased union activity is desperately needed in a world where power is shifting from governments to multinational corporations and financial markets and is crucial in those countries where union work is considered very dangerous. 

Therefore, the Palme Center supports:

- the development of strong and democratic trade unions around the world
- expanded cooperation between unions and governments worldwide
- trade union involvement and organization specifically among women, the young, and the vulnerable ( such as migrant workers and people in the informal sector)
