Aung San Suu Kyi

John Locke

Tracing liberalism down to one single person is of course not possible. Nevertheless, the writings of John Locke could perhaps be said to have had the largest influence on the development of its classical direction. Locke was born in 1632 in Somerset Great Britain, and spent his early years in the university world. His most important political work appeared in 1690, the ''Two Treatises of Government'', in where he argued that the function of the state is to protect the natural rights of its citizens, primarily to protect the right to property.

Martin Luther King Jr.

One of americas most visible advocates of nonviolence and direct action as methods of social change, Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta on 15 January 1929. During his life time King arranged and participated in several mass demonstration for the rights of afro-americans, among other the 1963 protest in Washington, in which he delivered his famous ''I have a dream''-speech. Mary Wollenstonecraft

Mary Wollstonecraft was born in London in 1759. She could argubly be regarded as one of the first famous spokesmen of womens rights, which she expressed in several writings. She challenged the idea that women were naturally below men, and argued that women also had God given rights, among other the right to education. Nelson Mandela

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 25, 1918. In 1944, after having graduated from university, he joined the African National Congress and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was aquitted in 1961. In 1964 he was sent to life imprisonment. During his years in prison, Nelson Mandela's reputation grew steadily. He was widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. In 1990 he was finally released, and was later on elected as president of South Africa.
 
 
Olof Palme

Born on 30th January 1927, Olof Palme made an early debut in student politics and later became chairman of the Swedish National Union of Students. In 1951 he joined the Social Democratic Student Club in Stockholm and later became Prime Minister of Sweden several times, from 1969 until his assassination in Stockholm in February 1986. Palmes long time concern with international affairs and his criticism of various forms of neocolonialism and military solutions gave origin to great respect from several other state leaders, as well as extensive critisism from others. Rigoberta Menchu

Rigoberta Menchu was born in Guatemala in 1959. As a teenager, she started working with social reform programs of the Catholic Church and was active in the women's rights movement. Later on she joined the Committee of the Peasant Union, in which she became involved in the organization of large scale demonstrations. Due to her resistent she was forced to flee the country, but did later on recieve large scale international recognition, when she in 1992 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
 
 
Rosa Louise Parks

Rosa Parks has become an icon of the civil rights movement after refusing to obey a public bus driver's orders to give up her seat to a white man on December 1, 1955, in Montgomery USA. She was arrested, tried, and convicted for disorderly conduct. The boycott and protests that followed forced the public transportation authority to end the practice of racial segregation on public buses. This event also sparked many other protests against segregation.
 
 
Shirin Ebadi

The Iranian lawyer and human rights activist Shirin Ebadi has received both national and international respect for promoting human rights and defending victims of the conservative faction's attack on freedom of speech and political freedom. Born in Paris in 1908, de Beauvoir early became an important philosopher and writer who focused on the social status of women. From 1931 to 1943 she taught philosophy in several schools in Marseille, Rouen and Paris, and became professor at the Sorbonne University from 1941 to 1943. Beauvoir was a lifelong companion of philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, and her book The Second Sex from 1949 is still among the most widely read feminist documents.
